SHINE Initiative is an open collaborative initiative exploring concentrated sunlight for high-temperature fabrication, materials processing, and community-scale applications that don't yet exist at accessible scale — anywhere.
What is SHINE Initiative
SHINE Initiative explores concentrating solar systems that deliver heat at temperatures sufficient for metal heat treating, material sintering, glass reforming, ceramics, and precision fabrication — processing that currently requires expensive industrial equipment or global supply chains that small communities and rural fabricators cannot access.
Unlike photovoltaic electricity, a concentrating solar thermal system's core components can have a shorter, more local supply chain. And because concentrated sunlight delivers heat without combustion, the processing environment is completely independent of the energy source — opening fabrication capabilities that communities have not had access to since industrialization removed the local forge.
The impact is concrete: lower barriers to community fabrication, local material loops from scrap and waste, and educational pathways for students to work on hardware that matters.

What We Do
Research & Development
Prototype development and characterization of concentrating solar furnace systems, instrumented and tested to a standard that produces publishable data and replicable designs — not just demonstrations.
Community Involvement
SHINE Initiative is meant to be larger than any one institution or company. We're building toward the skills, relationships, and local capacity that make a solar forge actually useful in a community — not just technically impressive.
Accessible Technology
The gap we're filling is between solar cookers and utility CSP plants. SHINE Initiative works the community-scale, high-temperature middle ground — where the impact on local fabrication and material resilience is greatest.
Texas A&M University is one model of what SHINE Initiative collaboration looks like — students engaged in real engineering problems, prototype hardware at multiple scales, and research that feeds back into the initiative directly.
Why This Work Has Impact
Government solar thermal funding has emphasized large-scale systems. Community-scale, high-temperature solar has been largely passed over — not because the need isn't real, but because it doesn't fit the metrics large programs optimize for. SHINE Initiative is operating in that gap on purpose.
Concentrated solar heat also opens a recycling and upcycling dimension that affordable distributed energy largely doesn't reach: aluminum remelt from local scrap, glass reforming from waste cullet, ceramics from clay-bearing waste streams. For communities working toward local material loops, this is meaningful and largely unexplored territory.
We are in the engineering phase — hardware development and prototype testing. The initiative is meant to be larger than any one institution or company, and we're actively looking for the collaborators who will help build what comes next.
